Pirate Revival – Tim Acid’s Last Monday Night Mix Show 8-10 GMT – End of an Era

Posted in Music, info on June 24, 2007 by theacidhouse

After much thought I have decided to bring my Monday Nights show on Pirate Revival Old Skool Internet Station to an end. I have been with the station since it started about 5 years ago, but times change and I need to move forward with some other projects.

I would like to say a special thank you to all the Listeners and fellow DJ’s for their support over the last few years.

I’ll continue being a member of the station in the capacity of a cover DJ, so I will be putting in the occasional set to assist when the airwaves are silent.

Thank you all for your support.

Posted in Music, mixes on June 22, 2007 by theacidhouse

This is part one of Visions of 1991, originally hosted on the website a while ago I thought I would put this back on-line. For me the selection of tunes in this mix are very close to my heart and hold special memories, this mix sums up 1991 with the blend of techno, hardcore and house anthems that was so typical of that era, part two will follow.

Acid Squelchy heaven ……ReBirth (TB303 emulator) Free from Propellerhead

Posted in Music, info on June 18, 2007 by theacidhouse

Acid House music began when musicians discovered that they could create interesting sounds with the Roland TB-303 analogue bass synthesizer by tweaking the resonance and frequency cut-off dials as they played. The term “acid” was used in Chicago at the time as a term for the squelchy “acid” sounds of such bass synthesizers such as the TB-303. It is said the first recordings were created by DJ Pierre, Spanky and Herbert J who formed “Phuture”.

“Phuture was me and two other guys, Spanky and Herbert J.” remembers Pierre. “We had this Roland 303, which was a bassline machine, and we were trying to figure out how to use it. When we switched it on, that acid sound was already in it and we liked the sound of it so we decided to add some drums and make a track with it. We gave it to Ron Hardy who started playing it straight away. In fact, the first time he played it, he played it four times in one night! The first time people were like, ‘what the fuck is this?’ but by the fourth they loved it. Then I started to hear that Ron was playing some new thing they were calling ‘Ron Hardy’s Acid Trax’, and everybody thought it was something he’d made himself. Eventually we found out that it was our track so we called it ‘Acid Trax’. I think we may have made it as early as 1985, but Ron was playing it for a long time before it came out.”

In recent years the Roland TB303 has become a highly prized piece of equipment and very collectable. However a software company called Propellerhead developed a software package called ReBirth that emulated the TB303 and also added the TR808 and TR909 drum machine allowing computer music producers to re-create this classic retro sound. Propellerhead Software no longer make this software, however they are now kindly offering this as a free download via a torrent available on their website, how cool is that.

Mix Tape Favourites – Vol 2 – Derrick May

Posted in Music, mixes on June 13, 2007 by theacidhouse

Derrick May is one of the original innovators of Detroit techno responsible for one of the largest Old skool anthem of this day ‘Strings of Life’ that still keeps the dance floors rocking some 20 years after it’s release. Derrick still produces and DJ’s high quality soulful intelligent techno music to this day in a mission in his own words ‘to save the world of bad music’. At The Barn in Essex, he was doing that exact same thing and delivering a message to the rapidly growing uk acid house scene. Derrick May is a true techno legend and The Acid House is proud to share with you this Live Set from a true master. The tape is labelled as 24th August 1989, I am not convinced this date is accurate as tunes like M.i.c – o.o.b.e and G.T.O – Pure are present on this mix and they came out in 1990, I won’t give away any more of the tracklisting but I can tell you the mix is top class.

Beyond Understanding….

Posted in Music, tunes on June 12, 2007 by theacidhouse

Hardcore time for ya today, but with a bit of soul and intelligence. First heard these tracks on mixes in 1992 by a local DJ called Haze a regular on the Sweat Soundsystem, and later on a mix tape by LTJ Bukem. The following two tunes broke the mould that was growing on the cheese that was coming out at that time and were what I believe the first release e.p on the Out of Romford Label. The following demonstrates the art of blending hardcore breakbeat with intelligent techno. Just a shame some of the other releases on this label did not meet the same standards.

For those who like it deep……

Posted in Music, mixes on June 8, 2007 by theacidhouse

I started to discover deeper sounds of house music when I recorded a Roger Sanchez Mix on Kiss FM (London) in January 1992. Although I was bang into hardcore & techno at that back then and a regular listener to Colin Dale and Colin Faver, I found time chill out to the laid back sounds of house music when I was not getting off my box at 145bpms. I still enjoy listening to a deep house mix from time to time and this morning found a recent Larry Heard Mix on Deep House Page that is full of old those old tunes that are on the Roger Sanchez Kiss mix I recorded back in the day. If you like it deep, check out Deep House Page, it is an excellent site with the largest selection of deep house mixes on the net, also check out Larry Heard’s (Mr Fingers) website and original deep house label Alleviated Records to dig deeper into the history.

The Bridewell Taxis

Posted in Music, tunes on June 7, 2007 by theacidhouse

It is amazing what you find in your record collection, a few weeks ago i was listing on oggs a box of tunes I have had in the attic for years. Most of them are odds and sods and left overs from a collection I bought from a second hand record shop a while back. Anyway I sold this one today ‘The Bridewell Taxis – Give In’ from 1990. Now personally I was not into Indie scene back then, and have never actually heard of these guys, after a bit of googling I have found out they are from Leeds and possibly still gigging. The A-Side is typical Indie style guitars and drum loops, but on the flip side of this tune is a gem called ‘whole dance nation’ a real obscure vocal treat with some acid squelch and Maggie Thatcher vocal samples. I have ripped this record so I thought I’d up it to you for your own aural pleasure ………I would go to say this is by no means a classic or would ever be a classic, infact it is probably unheard of by most, but it is interesting to hear other sounds that were being produced….kinda wish I’d not sold it now.

Mix Tape Favourites – Vol 1 – DJ Hype

Posted in mixes on June 5, 2007 by theacidhouse

This has to be one of the most exciting mix tapes from late 1990 that has been doing the rounds, the mixing is superb and highly creative for it’s age. I used to think Carl Cox was clever with his mix tricks, but DJ Hype just takes it to the next level and pulls of the most impressive scratching of any DJ I have heard. Get on the download, this is a real old skool treat. The mix is labelled 1991, but judging by the tunes I would say it was more likley to have been created in the later stage of1990 with plenty of bleeps, breaks and basslines.

I don’t have a complete tracklist, but I’ll let you know a few to give you a flavour.

Renegade Sound Wave : Meat Beat Manifesto : Spectrum : Dance Tones : Subject 13 : Project 86 : 4 hero : Kicksquad

enjoy!

Hens teeth & rocking horse shit….

Posted in Music, tunes on June 4, 2007 by theacidhouse

Ok so my arm is still in a cast, so I will not be playing on Pirate Revival tonight so hopefully Brooker will be doing the cover as usual. Although it’s possible to mix with one arm, it’s not much fun trying to get records in and out of sleeves and is frustrating. Anyway should hopefully be back in a few weeks time, and good news is Brooker will be taking the 10-12pm slot after my session for the foreseeable.

Right tune time, some real gems today for your ipod or mp3 mix sets, most of these are like hens teeth and rocking horse shit. First up is the original bootleg version of Jamie Principles ‘Your Love’ with the Candi Stratton ‘You got the love’ accapella, and two other tracks taken from the booty.

Next up is the DMC remix of Frankie Knuckles ‘Tears’ by Dimitri

Followed by the underground hardcore white label classic Turk – The Lover
