I have another great mix to share with you from Ronan Le Roux, if you like you the darker side of early acid music then get on this mix. Many of these tunes I have not heard myself, so I cannot give you a tracklisting, but if you like to hear old skool mixes that are not playing all usual anthems or obvious tunes, then you will not be dissapointed with this one. Enjoy!!

Flea Markets and Cold Fingers – Winter Crate Digging for the hardened collectors

Posted in Diggers Delight, Music with tags , , , , , on January 24, 2009 by theacidhouse

Just got back from my local flea market after freezing my fingers off for an hour, but came back with a bag full of goodies. A genre crossing selection of 70’s, Disco, Electro Funk, Old Skool House, Dub House, old skool hip hop, some classics, some not, some good, some will become frisbies. Some buys were a few experimental moments, and some were moments of joy having found a few beauties on good nick. I was pleased to get hold of a copy of James Browns Funky Drummer, also the “Jam to it again” release on City Limits I have been meaning to pick up for a while. The Orb Mixes of the underated Blue Pearls – Mother Dawn are lush, and give the tune a really nice ambient dubby affair for those chilled out moods. Another Gem is Djum Djum, I have a few of their releases on Outer Rhythm and this one does not dissapoint, a nice 1990 break beat tune with an italo feel to it. I have managed to find some youtube links so you can have a listen to some of the tunes, I am now off to put my fingers in the toaster to warm them up.

Tune of the Day – Liz Torres – Touch of Love

Posted in House, Music with tags , on January 22, 2009 by theacidhouse

Gotta say I think Liz Torres is super sexy, her picture on the cover sleeve of “If you keep it up” is a good enough reason to buy the record without hearing the tune, one hot chick. Also she has a great voice and has been responsible for some cracking Chicago House tunes, my favourite of them all is Touch of Love, infact I liked it so much I bought myself the white label and the general release.

Record Review – Retours D’Acide 87-88

The gods were smiling on me on the last day in May, I was moving all my worldly possessions into a back of a 7.5 tonne truck when the postman turned up and handed me a package with the ever so familiar shape that I have been receiving at that address over the years. If it had been two hours later, the van would have gone and I would have never seen this record. Annoyingly my decks were packed away and I had to wait until I could get to a turntable to be able to play this new piece of glorious wax.

I was put on the distribution mailing list for French labels Treue um Treue limited 300 pressings of Retours D’Acidee. The vinyl is a super sexy yellow and black picture disc with provocative images, the contents on the grooves are eight tracks of pure underground New Beat and Acid from 2008.

The release starts of nicely with the slow tempo 103BPM sounds of Leanders – Baby Phat, with a funky bassline and a nice mid breakdown count in 1,2,3,4 and the bassline kicks. A(ci)d Absurdum’s – Die Welt Bergauf is a bleepy number with a gritty electro bassline. Kalkenn’s coolly titled- Zombies on Botox delivers a 113 BPM mean and dark new beat tune with plenty of acid wonkyness and a huge heavy bass kick. IWIK 88’s Acid Messiah is a nice Acid track with plenty of 303 business. Flip the tune over and you have  Incident Voyageurs’ Ibiza 100 BPM heavy industrial sounding tune with plenty of bleeps, Jongbloed’s Neo Beat is a superb dark, deep new style tune, you will have to watch you speakers on the bass it is massive. Pierre Normal’s Acid Tear adds a nice touch the release with trippy vocals and a nice 303 hook, the release ends with Mordek’s New Blitz, a nicely crafted deep Chicago style acid tune with some vocal and nicely programmed 303 acieeeeeeed.

All in all this is a great ltd edition release and gets my vote for the funky sexy arty picture disc alone, if you are into your European New beat & Acid movement from the late 1980’s, then this is a must have, you best start tracking down and buy a copy before they all sell out, I have only seen a few copies on discogs, so happy hunting.

Warp 9 – Nunk (Instrumental)

I was listening to this early today and thought it deserved to be ressurected as it sounds just so good. The instrumental is a nice laid back electronic funk groove from 1982, and was relased when the emerging Electro scene  became popular in the UK in the early 1980’s.  I use to eagerly await the release of the latest Streetsounds electro and rush out and buy it, bring it home and start trying out my latest breakdancing move, which would usually end in an injury, like carpet burns on the head, or a bloody nose from kneeing myself in the face while doing crazy legs or the windmill. I could have uploaded a number of classic electro or the more obvious ones, but thought Warp 9 – Nunk is timeless and would work any dancefloor in a downtempo groove kinda way. Checkout the excellent Go Bang Brighton’s website for a superb interview with the Electro legend Greg Wilson.

Tim Acid – Visions of House 1990 – 1991 Vol 1

Posted in House, Music, mixes with tags , , , , , on January 7, 2009 by theacidhouse

Thought I would resurface this mix I orignally made in 2004, it reflects some of my favourite European and US house music that I was listening to during 1991 and hold special memories. The tune selection is largely influenced by a Mark Wilkinson who at the time was working for Flying records and playing at small venues like the pub in Colnbrook, and also by a 1991 recording of Danny Rampling at The Ministry of Sound.

The Delorme – Beatniks (Dharma Bums Mix)

Posted in House, Music with tags , , on January 6, 2009 by theacidhouse

The year 1993, the place Club UK, Wandsworth London, the tune – The Delorme – Beatniks (Dharma Bums Mix). I had just got back from an around the world travelling experience, although we had only got as far as the Greek Island, and ended up spending three months drinking, DJ’ing, and more drinking, taking a much needed rest from chemicals and the Free Party Scene, until money ran out and I came back to the UK. By now my musical taste by now had completley moved back into the house music domain after a confusing year of underground dance music ripping at the seems and splitting into all different directions. News was on the street that a new Club in Wandsworth was the best thing since sliced bread, and one of my mates suggested we go there for his Birthday. I just found this website on the said club that is worth a read up on, I have fond memories of the place although I only went a couple of times, both occasions were great experiences. Big tunes on that night was Direkt – Two Fat Guitars, and the lesser known but equally classic The Delorme – Beatniks (Dharma Bums Mix), of which I thought I’d share you today.

From the Club UK website

Club UK in Wandsworth, South London, opened its doors in 1993 and quickly established itself as one of the leading underground nightclubs in the London Scene. After a couple of years the club had attracted the attention of the police, local councils and anti drug campaigners. After a high profile drug related death Club UK owners lost their license and it was finally closed down in 1997 never to be reopened. Club UK’s legacy however lives on and is still talked about even today, and mention ‘Club UK’ in Wandsworth to one of the clubbers that frequented it and your sure to provoke an interesting story or two.

Robin Wants Revenge !!!

Posted in House, Music, Rave, Techno with tags , , on January 6, 2009 by theacidhouse

For many years there has been a lot of mystery that surrounds this tune, I remember first hearing this on a Carl Cox tape from back in the day and and fell in love with the deep techno bassline. Then my mate got a copy on Record Review with the track titled “Robin Wants Revenge”, some 15 years later I managed to pick this up for a £5 . Later I discover this track originally came out on Jungle Jam Records and was by Robin Wants Revenge titled “Well (Frankie) my Son”, yours for a mere £300 on discogs. I recall there were some rumours that the artist kept himself unknown as the bassline was taken from Derrick May’s “Wiggin” tune, later sampled by Nexus 21 on one of my favourite tunes “Real Love”. So still to this date as I am aware no one has put their hands up to putting out this tune. However indications could be that it was Ray Love, as the Liquid 1991 remix of Robin wants revenge appears on the flipside of “Techno for all mankind”. But then again “Techno for all mankind” was a stolen tune originally done by Dance 2 Trance in 1990 and was titled “We came in peace” of which I have the original white label from 1990. So the mystery still remains, who is Robin Wants Revenge?
