DJ Alfredo @ Amnesia 1985

Posted in Balearic, mixes with tags on August 28, 2009 by theacidhouse

Well the weekend has landed, love the August Bank Holiday Vibes. Just having a quick dig around and stumbled across this excellent blog with some mixes by some of the DJ’s on the Balearic scene. And one of those being DJ Alfredo, whom I have mentioned once or twice in previous posts. Quite interesting to hear what he was playing at Amnesia in 1985, way before the Acid House explosion kicked off.

Old Skool Legends 3 – Colin Dale – Exclusive Mix

Posted in Old Skool Legends, mixes with tags , , , on August 12, 2009 by theacidhouse

colin dale

This months Old Skool Legend is the incredible Colin Dale, and he has kindly gave me a superb mix to share with you all that keeps true to his progressive forward thinking attitude towards music and has embraced new technologies.

Many of you, like me would have been bought up on the abstract dance shows on Kiss FM during the late 80’s and early 1990’s. To me this was my dance music education, when I would listen and tape record the shows religiously in late 1990 and all the way through 1991 and then try and track the vinyl down.  Sadly I no longer have those tapes, but the music that Colin played back then has shaped my musical journey through life, and I for one am very grateful for this.

From Colin’s My Space Page http://www.myspace.com/abstraktdance

To call Colin Dale “legendary” is no over-estimation…….here is a Dj that has been one of London’s most cutting edge Djs for over 20 years and still continues to surprise and marvel. Music was always a big part of the Dale family’s life……Soul, Reggae, Jazz and Funk…..even before Colin left school friends included Fabio, Grooverider, Dave Angel, Jumping Jack Frost and Bryan Gee……..all who went on to be top Djs in their respective scenes. It all began in 1982 when Colin who was then working as a banker in the city of London began to warm up for Hip Hop supremo “Tim Westwood” at the cult Gossips nightclub in Soho playing cuts like Soul Sonic Force, Strafe, Shannon and Donna Summer. In 1985 Colin was one of the key members of the pirate radio station Kiss FM and soon after left banking to pursue a career in music and the “Abstrakt Dance” radio show was born. For 16 years “Abstrakt Dance” was a ground-breaking show which quite simply bought Techno to the masses. Guests on the show included All the UR crew, Hawtin, Angel, Pullen, Garnier, Saunderson, Craig, May, Cox……the list goes on and .. the show was put on the internet in 1993 Colin became a household name in Techno circles Worldwide. It was the first ever Techno show to be transmitted live with visuals and it was revolutionary. It was around this time that Colin teamed up with Brenda Russell and Colin Faver to do the “Deep Space” series of clubs in London which again saw the team take London’s Techno scene to new highs. Other club nights that Colin has been involved in include Electric Boogie, Vapour Space, Deep and Jelly. Production wise Colin has recorded for Perfecto on their very first LP, Obsessive, Logic, Sensei, Visitor, Abstrakt Dance, Swag, Laus and Alien Funk amongst others as well as 7 well received mix compilation LPs for various major record labels. (see discography*) As well as being a regular guest at clubs such as Fabric, Rex, Pasha (Buenos Aires) and Love (Brazil) Colin has toured the Worlds clubs extensively…..Japan, China, Russia, Australia and Eastern Europe………Colin is a favourite the World over. Looking back Colin has played some of the Worlds best parties…..Dance Valley, Full Moon, Tribal Gathering, Sunrise, Energy, Love Parade, Automatik and Rage @ Heaven. Fast forward to 2008 and its all systems go…there’s the new revamped Abstrakt Dance record label and web-site due in March 2009, lots of new music productions a new studio in London and also regular “Wildlife nights. There’s also the first ever DJ management agency that specialises in the world of the digital DJ……”WildLife” Artist Management feat: Colin Dale, Sophie Oliver, Jacksonville, Pure Science, Jacksonville, Pure Science, Living City, Mark Dale, Tomoki and Steve Strawberry amongst others. We are really pushing all the new technologies like Ableton Live, Traktor and Final Scratch…….there are also some new and innovative soft synths like Reaktor 5, Spectrasonics, the new re-vamped Acid 6 and of course the old favourite Reason…….don’t worry I haven’t turned my back on vinyl…….there’s just so many other just as usable sound sources that it seems a shame not to use them. Still as busy and popular as ever these days Colin sound is still tough and funky with blissful shades of Electro and Tech House. New to Colin’s sets are Dex and FXs..3 turntables, Rane Serato, Pioneer CDs and FXs and exclusive tracks and edits..the future is here Colin Dale is sponsored by Allen & Heath DJ mixers and also featured in the Sony publication All time 100 DJs

oldskool

Less than two weeks ago I had the amazing opportunity of playing at a club classics night hosted by the Balearic Brothers on Pride Weekend in Brighton. Although not recorded live on the night, I thought I would record the set pretty much in the same track order as it was on the night. Being a Club Classics night, I dusted off lots of Anthems and being pride night, I just could not resist dropping King’s “Love & Pride” that went down well nicely with plenty of people singing along to it. Anyway here it is for you to enjoy, recorded in one go on my usual weapons of choice…2 x Technics SL1210 Turntables a Mixer.

Old Skool Legend 2 – DJ Greg Wilson

greg wilson brighton

In February 2009 I was lucky enough to hear Greg Wilson play at the Loft in Brighton. I had bought my ticket well in advanced for this event as my gut feeling was it was going to be a special night. That evening there was an incredible buzz of excitement, tickets had sold out and everyone was desperately trying to gain some to get to hear the legend. This was the first time I had heard Greg play live and I was blown away by the music and the whole atmosphere. I was only talking with someone last night about when the Frankie Knuckles Hallucinogenic Dub of Rufus & Chaka Khans “Ain’t Nobody” got dropped, the build up was immense, and the place went off completely when the lyrics eventually hit. Another stand out tune for me personally (that I got id’d later) was Pete Herbert’s Mix of Tony Orlando’s – Don’t Let go. I remember being at the bar at the time when this came on and thinking how one element of the the tune had a similar kind of sound to Jimmy Bo Horne’s – Spank. If I had not actually just ordered the drink having queued up for about 15 mins, I would have rushed straight back to the dance floor for this. Both myself and my wife stood at the bar nodding heads with big grins while this tune played agreeing this was a special night.

The Acid House proudly presents the 2nd DJ in the series of Old Skool Legends, the Godfather of UK Electrofunk Greg Wilson.

To trace some of the origins of dance music as it is today, you have to go back in time to the days of when disco and funk were the choice of the dance floor. So it’s not a surprise to find that hundreds of samples in house music were lifted from disco, funk and Electrofunk tunes in the 70’s and early 80’s, therefore directly shaping the sound and movement of modern dance music.

With a DJ pedigree stretching back to the original disco era, Greg Wilson first came to national prominence in the early 1980’s as the first to champion New York’s emerging Electro-Funk sound.

From day one, his support for this radical new electronic dance music caused deep divisions within the jazz-funk fraternity.

Electro-Funk’s legacy is huge. It announced the computer age and seduced a generation with its drum machines, synthesizers, sequencers, dub mixes, bonus beats and samples… Its influences lay not only with Kraftwerk, and British Futurist acts like the Human League and Gary Numan, but with pioneering black artists, including Miles Davis, Sly Stone, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Norman Whitfield and George Clinton (Greg Wilson)

Electro-Funk is unquestionably the source from which much of today’s house, techno, and breakbeat-oriented club music originated.

1982-84

Braving outright hostility from jazz-funk and soul purists, Greg Wilson’s brave new world of electronic funk could be experienced at largely black dance nights, in clubs such as Legend in Manchester, the Wigan Pier, the Stars Bar in Huddersfield, and at numerous all-dayers in places like Preston, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, Derby, Blackpool, Wigan and Sheffield.

‘I had fantastic support, Legend was always packed to the rafters on a Wednesday and it was the norm for about 450 people to head up to Wigan on a Tuesday from all over the North and Midlands… and double that on a special occasion!’ (Greg Wilson)

Electro-Funk heralded the arrival of New York’s ‘Hip Hop’ culture in the UK, and Greg was among its earliest and most enthusiastic ambassadors…He cites Malcolm McLaren’s ‘Buffalo Gals’ video (1982) as a defining moment for the arrival of Hip Hop in the UK:

‘For here, before our very eyes, was scratch mixing, graffiti art, and the most amazing sight anyone could remember – a man spinning on his head! The age of the breakdancer had arrived.’ (Greg Wilson)

Then, in 1983, Greg became the first dance music DJ to become resident at Manchester’s Hacienda, then very much an indie and ‘alternative’ music venue.

It would be no exaggeration to say that the future of UK Club Culture began here…. Nothing would be quite the same again.

1982–84 was a time of intense musical creativity, an ‘anything goes’ era, before house and techno standardised both the tempo and rhythm of club music.

1984 – 94

Greg retired from DJ’ing in 1984, but his involvement with music continued.

That same year he co-produced the landmark Street Sounds ‘UK Electro’ album. Later in the decade, he returned with the cult Manchester Ruthless Rap Assassins, who he managed and produced.

In 1994, his role as ‘Electro-Funk Pioneer’ was acknowledged when he compiled the best-selling ‘Classic Electro Mastercuts’ album, which reached the Top 20 of the UK album chart.

2003-

As the importance of Electro-Funk’s musical legacy has become increasingly apparent, more attention than ever is being focused on the crucial 1982-84 period, which apparently shaped so much of what followed. Now, through his website (www.electrofunkroots.co.uk), Greg is once again acting as an ambassador for Electro-Funk.

Head over to Greg’s website www.electrofunkroots.co.uk to read more about the Legend, view historical charts he compiled, interviews and other interesting information.

Also join Greg’s Facebook Group to keep up to date on up and coming gigs around the UK and the rest of the world.

Bring some summer sunshine into your life at the start of June when we’ve got a very special party for you..

Producer, songwriter, musician and Balearic DJ sound pioneer PHIL MISON is our very special guest this month.

REVERSO 68 is the studio based project of Phil Mison and Pete Herbert. The two met many moons ago whilst Phil was a resident at the Cafe Del Mar in Ibiza and bought records from Pete who was running the infamous Atlas Records vinyl emporium in Soho, London at the time. Over the last few years REVERSO 68 have released some of the best modern Balearic music around. They appear regularly on uber cool Belgian label Eskimo Recordings (alongside the much hyped Aeroplane), and you should check ‘Piece Together’, ‘Especial’, and ‘Tokyo Disco’ now! Go to : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Reverso+68 for the full list of their productions. The REVERSO 68 sound has been described as a mix of Balearic disco and spaced-out melodic moments made with the dancefloor in mind, and we think that’s a perfect recipe for a Balearic Jukebox party!

Phil Mison has also championed the chill-out music genre since its inception in the early-90s, after being inspired by listening to Jose Padilla at the Cafe Del Mar. He began his long DJ career at London’s famed Milk Bar in 1991, segued into producing after a decade DJing around the world and touring with bands such as Leftfield. In 1995, he released the first of his Soundcolours compilation, the groundbreaking series that featured electronic music, mixed for mood over the traditional beat match. Ten compilations later, including Real Ibiza compilations 3 through 7, Mison has exported this island flavour into crafting an original artist album as Cantoma. Phil Mison is a truly Balearic soul, so come and check him out!

While of course it is great to reminisce about music of the past, there are also so many good tunes being produced at the moment that I have been hearing out and about. And with such an abundance to choose from it can be difficult to keep up with the fast moving pace as it is today. Years back you would get your hands on a mix tape, if you were lucky directly from a local DJ, or if it was by a “named” DJ then it was probably be some 100th generation copy of a recording from a live event or studio mix, then came the task of id’ing and tracking down those tunes. These days DJ’s put mixes or podcasts on-line for free and usually provide a track list, keeping you bang up to date with the goings on in the dance music scene. Local Brighton DJ / Promoter Paul Budd who alsi Dj’s under other guises such as Pablo Contraband shares his mixes via the blog Lovemeloveyouback, and usually offers a nice variety of sounds from tech & deep house through to downtempo underground disco grooves. Today I was listening to two of his mixes on my long car journey and thought I’d draw your attention to them, the first is a Slo Mo Mix in a kind of Greg Wilsonesque style which has some outstanding tunes and clever mixing, particularly on the 6th Borough Project’s “do it to the max” (unless this has had a re-edit). And the second mix is more of a deep house flavour but kicking off with a great US rmx of Spandau Ballet’s Chant No 1, the taking you into all different directions of loveliness and also dropping the amazing disco funk fuelled new Joey Negro tune that I was pleased to hear an appearance of, especially after buying my copy a few weeks back.  Anyway go check them out here and open you ears to some new music, you can also be updated on Paul’s up and coming events, in Feb he bought Greg Wilson back to Brighton for an amazing night, and this month see Rocky and Diesel back on the decks for a night of classics and upfront tunes.
