A lesser known B-Side from the legendary Acid House Label Trax recordings from Chicago I thought I would share with you today. According to discogs.com, Kool Rock Steady is the Cousin of Afika Bambaataa and invented Hip House along side friends Tryee Cooper and Fast Eddie. I was not a huge fan of Hip House and there are only a hand full of tracks from that genre that I like, the A-Side of this release I thought was quite weak, but the flip side co-written with acid legend Lidell Townsell makes up for this and makes it worth while purchase.

In 2004 I started to notice some new releases adopting the original acid house sounds, and one that really hit the spot and stood out was Alex Kid’s Don’t Hide it release on French label F Communications with an excellent dub and vocal version.

Last year the Most Excellent Justin Robertson (see what I did there…clever eh), released a double CD called The Art of Acid. The second disc was more of interest as it was unmixed and consisted of recent edits of some classic Chicago Acid house tracks. Included was the Greg Wilson mix of No Way back, that I seem to hear quite regulary in Brighton, but also an intersting re-edit by Graeme Park of Pierre’s Phuture Phatasy Club – Dream Girl. For me the original has an amazing acid hook, but I always thought the vocal let the track down in a big way. So it was refreshing to hear Graeme’s re-edit maybe a little drawn out over 9mins, but nether the less I prefer it to the original vocal version. Another treat is Dusty Kids remix of the all time classic and one of my favourite tunes Frankie Knuckles – Your Love, while it is still not a touch on the original, it is a refreshing tripped out instrumental edit that changes the texture of the original and brings new colour and light with the use of the echo effects and delays. It is available on Juno Download, and looks like there are some extra edits that were not on the CD, worth a listen at least, if you like it, go out and buy it.

Less than two weeks ago I had the amazing opportunity of playing at a club classics night hosted by the Balearic Brothers on Pride Weekend in Brighton. Although not recorded live on the night, I thought I would record the set pretty much in the same track order as it was on the night. Being a Club Classics night, I dusted off lots of Anthems and being pride night, I just could not resist dropping King’s “Love & Pride” that went down well nicely with plenty of people singing along to it. Anyway here it is for you to enjoy, recorded in one go on my usual weapons of choice…2 x Technics SL1210 Turntables a Mixer.

Well the good news is I have finally got all of my records back home from storage so I can start digging through again to share some musical love with you all of the old skool variaty.

First up we have The MacKenzie – Chicago Trip, an underground warehouse tune produced in 1990 on MacKenzie records Belgium. In a way it is a rip off of Lil Louis French Kiss, but does it very well and gives the tune a real edge to it. Then in true house style some sneaky Italians called Alpha DY rip of The Mackenzie by releasing Chicago Trip under their name and adding only a few minor changes if I remeber rightly. Only a couple of years ago the Alpha DY tune was fetching silly money, just because it had a red stamp on it.

The MacKenzie – Chicago Trip

http://www.mediafire.com/?t4nymhz4nmz

Next up we have some great UK Acid House by This Ain’t Chicago, with a track called Ride The Rhythm, production credits go to Dizzie Dee who alo produced the classic Tainted Love by Impedance and also was involved with chart topping Candy Flip.

This Ain’t Chicago – Ride The Rhythm

http://www.mediafire.com/?jzmjuy0mwxt

From the excellent US label Nu Groove we have Underground Kids – Get up, I remeber buying this in 1993 from a Second hand record shop (that will remain nameless, as I still go digging there) although the track was released in 1989, I had only just fully immersed myself into house music after collecting mainly hardcore and techno tunes up until then. I used to play it regulary and people would always ask what it was, probably because it sounded so different to the house music that was being churned out in 93. Still a firm favourite of mine from the Nu Groove camp.

Underground Kids – Get up (Club Mix)

http://www.mediafire.com/?mvy0niijzvz

Underground Kids – Get Up (Science Mix)

http://www.mediafire.com/?mvy0niijzvz

Lastly we a have little known Acid tune from 1988 from the UK that was released on small lable called Move n Groove. Do not really know much about the artist other the info on Discogs, but really like the raw energy and simplicity of this one.

Zoo – Extasy

http://www.mediafire.com/?lmnyt3xqznw

Enjoy…..and remeber, if you take your time to download the music…maybe take some time to comment…it’s easy to do and is always good to hear other peoples views.

(This documentary approach provides a fascinating insight into the lives, circumstances and concerns of the subjects.)

To complement the exhibition, PYMCA will also be hosting a talk with prominent guest speaker Ted Polhemus; anthropologist, photographer and author of some of the World’s most influential style tribe books. He has spent his years documenting the culture vultures and explorers of identity that have formed youth movements over the last fifty years. Today over 350 events are held in the main auditorium each year and a series for young, just signed artists takes place in the Elgar Room. The Hall also showcases world music and jazz artists through its lunchtime music series, ignite, and a free exhibition series entitled reflect.

PYMCA has built its reputation as the World’s leading photographic youth music culture archive, specialising in global youth culture, lifestyle and music and was established over a decade ago by Jon Swinstead. His aim was to create a collection of images that captured the real essence of life as a young person. PYMCA has been known as an independent, London-based archive, since 1997, sourcing, and collecting quality photography documenting youth and subculture fashions, movements and lifestyles from all over the world, past and present. PYMCA images are unique by delivering an intrinsic understanding of these cultures, as opposed to the typical media stereotyping and pigeonholing. Many of its photographers were deeply involved in the cultures that they captured through the lens, giving their work an added intensity and honesty and delivering a more genuine cultural insight. Over the past few years PYMCA has produced some of London’s most interesting subcultural exhibitions using images from its archive. In 2009, PYMCA continues to develop its unique offering of images to now combine more than just images. If you have a question about youth culture, go to PYMCA. Unordinary People launches its change to become PYMCA Cultural Research.
