808 State DJ’s – Radio Shows

Posted in Music, tunes on April 17, 2008 by theacidhouse

808 State was formed in 1988 in Manchester, England. Martin Price was the owner of a record store called Eastern Bloc, and was also the founder of independent label Creed. Customers Graham Massey of the band Biting Tongues, and Gerald Simpson, joined with Price to form a hip-hop group called Hit Squad Manchester. Soon after the band shifted to an acid house sound, recording the debut Newbuild in 1988, while using the name 808 State for the first time. The album was released on Price’s own record label. Graham had been a member of the hippy – fusion band Aqua in the 1970s along with violinist Graham Clark, a former pupil of Manchester Grammar School.

The band really began to find commercial success when their song “Pacific State” was picked up by Gary Davies in 1989 on his Radio 1 daytime show. The song was on a compilation album of many artists at the time, but the resulting attention Davies bestowed upon it, and its re-playing on his show over a number of weeks, led to the song being released as a single to chart success, with a peak of #10 on the UK Singles Chart. Coupled with the emerging Acid House scene at the time, 808 State had arrived.

Simpson left the group in 1989 to form his own solo project, A Guy Called Gerald. Voodoo Ray was his biggest song. At this point, the remaining personnel enlisted DJs. Andrew Barker and Darren Partington (known as the Spinmasters), recorded an EP called Quadrastate in 1989. Their next album, Ninety, was well-received by the rave culture.[citation needed]

MC Tunes (real name Nicky Lockett) was a Manchester rapper, who worked with the band on his 1990 album, The North At Its Heights. The album was a moderate success, reaching #26 in the UK charts, and also saw European and Japanese release. It spawned three UK singles, The Only Rhyme That Bites – featuring a sample of “The Big Country” performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic – (UK #10), Tunes Splits The Atom (UK #18) and Primary Rhyming (UK #67). Tunes later returned in 1996 to work with on a new track, Pump, taken from 808 State’s album Thermo Kings. It was due to be released as a single, but this never occurred.

808 State’s next album was released in 1991 Ex:el, which featured vocals from Bernard Sumner (New Order) and ex-Sugarcubes vocalist Björk, other hits include In Yer Face, Cubik, Olympic & Lift.

In 1992, Price left the group to perform solo producing, eventually forming his own label, Sun Text. The remaining members released a fourth album called Gorgeous, and after that, did some remix work for David Bowie, Soundgarden, and other performers, before returning with the album entitled Don Solaris in 1996. This album marked a change for the band who wanted to shake off their rave moniker and, with ‘Don Solaris’, they aimed to create a more beautiful, cinemascopic sound. The album featured contributions from James Dean Bradfield from the Manic Street Preachers, who sung vocals on ‘Lopez’ which reached number 20 in the UK singles charts. This song was remixed by Brian Eno. The song ‘Bond’ featured vocals by Mike Doughty from the band Soul Coughing and ‘Azura’ featured Louise Rhodes from Lamb. They released a greatest-hits compilation named 808:88:98 in 1998-their last on record label ZTT and a 1998 remix of Pacific soared high in the charts. In 2000, their pioneering 1988 acid house album ‘Newbuild’ was re-released.

Bass, Breaks & Sheffield Bleeps…

Posted in Music, mixes, tunes on April 11, 2008 by theacidhouse

One of the first record of the bleeps genre was “The Theme” by Bradford’s Unique 3 in 1989. LFO’s “LFO” was released on Sheffield’s Warp Records in 1990. Nightmares on Wax next released “Dextrous” on Warp Records in 1990. The label went on to release the club anthem “Testone” by Sweet Exorcist (DJ Parrot, and Richard H. Kirk of Sheffield avant-garde experimentalists Cabaret Voltaire), a track that went on to define the Yorkshire sound, and also the rather silly “Tricky Disco” by Tricky Disco. These were followed by a string of releases on the short-lived Leeds label Bassic Records, including the “Ital’s Anthem” by Ital Rockers, a Chapeltown dub reggae band diversifying into techno, and Juno’s “Soul Thunder”, an understated track now recognised as a techno classic.

The music scene in England changed, as piano house anthems took over northern clubs and the breakbeat hardcore scene grew in London and the West Midlands.

Bassic Records folded in 1991, taking most of their acts with them. Those who survived changed styles, with Ital Rockers going back to dub reggae and LFO shifting to techno.

Detroit Techno

Posted in Music, Video, tunes on February 21, 2008 by theacidhouse

Origins

Source – Wikipedia

The three individuals most closely associated with the birth of Detroit techno as a genre are the “Belleville Three“; Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May. (More specific readings on the Belleville Three). These three high school friends from a Detroit suburb would soon find their basement tracks in dancefloor demand, thanks in part to seminal Detroit radio personality The Electrifying Mojo. Ironically, Derrick May once described Detroit techno music as being a “complete mistake…like George Clinton and Kraftwerk caught in an elevator, with only a sequencer to keep them company.”[1]

Detroit techno music was originally thought of as a subset to Chicago’s early style of house.[2] However, some critics believe that the Detroit techno movement was an adjunct to the house music.[3] (Named so for the new style of music played at a Chicago nightclub called “The Warehouse”). Although producers in both cities used the same hardware and even collaborated on projects and remixes together, Detroiters traded the choir-friendly vocals of House with metallic clicks, robotic voices and repetitive hooks reminiscent of an automotive assembly line. Many of the early techno tracks had futuristic or robotic themes, although a notable exception to this trend was a single by Derrick May under his pseudonym Rhythm is Rhythm, called “Strings of Life.” This vibrant dancefloor anthem was filled with rich synthetic string arrangements and took the underground music scene by storm in May of 1987. With subtle differences between the genres, clubs in both cities included Detroit techno and Chicago house tracks in their playlists without objection (or much notice by non-audiophiles) from patrons.

A small selection of Detroit techno, some obvious and some not some obvious.

And some more old skool house classics and italian piano

Posted in Music, tunes on January 15, 2008 by theacidhouse

In 1989 across the pond the NY city boys were producing some awesome soulful underground house on labels like Nu Groove & Strictly Rhythm, and in Detroit the pioneers of techno were producing truely original tracks and some timeless pieces on the KMS and Transmat lables. In Chicago the birth place of house music, the sounds developed further with lables like Trax. But in Europe the Italians did what they did best, bootlegged and ripped of sounds from every decent tune across the globe and mashed them up together to create a concoction of underground dance meets Pete Waterman and developed their own sound of popular cheese that sounds so dated today. However amongst the piling mountains of cheddar, their were some gems that did slip through the net and became true classics in their own rights. Below are some tunes from across the four corners of the globe that helped shaped dance music to what it is today, and some tunes that maybe should stay in the past but for many will have some good memories attached to them.

The late 80’s and early 90’s during the economic crash in 80’s the depression hit our country with thousands lost jobs, interest rates of about 13% made many homes repossessed, derelict houses in many streets. However through these bleak times there was a movement that unified people, bought a sense of purpose, there was no distinction of class, race, background, people would meet in a field, warehouse, squat, club, aircraft hanger and party their arses off all night with big cheesy grins on their faces, long live the memories of 88-93.

Some more hands in the air tunes for the grey matter and to revive those dayz.
