Here is a recording of The Warm Sounds Live show on Pirate Revival net radio from Tuesday evening, 2hrs of randomly selecting tunes and putting them in the mix. The Warm Sounds Show is still in its infancy and has been running for little over 6 months, it is very organic, and requires no pre-planning or programming, just simply selecting tunes that spring to mind at the time and play what is being felt. It is completely live, so warts and all are included, no rewind or retakes (for those that need to know the hardware used… 2 x SL1210’s, 2 x Pioneer CDJ’s & a Mixer). The show goes out live on Pirate Revival every other Tuesday evening between 6pm-8pm GMT, and is just intended as bit of fun by playing good music to friends and music lovers. It is not “old Skool” centric, in truth playing the same 88-93 records over and over again for the last decade has become a little tiresome so this show explores other musical interests, although a nod to a much loved and influential era of my life can be felt and heard…..apologies in advanced for the lack of mic skills.

Well rumours are floating around the tinternet today that Panasonic are ceasing production of the Technics SL1200 / SL1210 Turntable in Feb 2010. At this stage I am unsure if this announcement is fact, but if so this spells the end to a much-loved and essential piece of electronics that has provided club goers and music lovers with years of pleasure. Technics has been the choice of professional DJs since the early 1970s. The SL series turntables are legendary, with over 3 million sets produced and used by DJs and musicians in recording studios and clubs the world over. All SL models feature the undisputedly accurate, reliable and durable quartz direct drive motor, with aluminium diecast cabinets and heavy rubber base for vibration damping. To me this is very sad sad news, but I guess for a manufacturer in these tough economic times, coupled with the onslaught of low cost digital DJ’ing solutions, it would make sense to discountinue. As a vinyl lover, this puts another nail in the coffin of the long standing format, as labels will be even more less inclined to release on vinyl when the club standard turntable will eventually be a museum peice.

So what are your thoughts on this?

Well after the storms that just battered the South Coast this weekend, I thought some Balearic vibes may bring out the sun in our souls and warm us up for the week ahead. Sunday Soundwaves Balearic Mix by The Daddy

At last I managed to succesfully get a copy of this record, after the inital attempt getting lost in the post. So arrived yesterday morning in all its shiny black goodness came this most excellent US hip house from 1991. This featured on a 1991 mix tape I had from DJ Legend Danny Rampling, the recording was from the Ministry of Sound in the year that it opened. The track selection on the tape slid effortlessly between sublime ambient tracks like The McKenzie – No Promises to early 80’s disco classic like Hamilton Bohannon’s Let’s Start the Dance. While I usually avoided Hip House tunes, this one was a real grower, a catchy disco influenced tune sampling Dinosaurs L – Go Bang and a sneaky little sample from Eddie Grants – Timewarp. From producer Norty Cotto whom has done countless reords under many an alias and released on NY Label Moon Roof Records, 1991 a sublabel of Tod Terry’s garage label Freeze that became defunkt in 1997.

Well it has been sometime since the last update due to a number reasons. You may have noticed at the end of September The Acid House was shut down for over a week by the housing authorities for accommodating artists works within The Acid House that allegedly did not have permission to be hung on the walls there. This was a real shame and a blow to all the work and effort over the years that have gone into keeping a flame alight and re-uniting the rave soldiers of yesteryear with the sounds they marched too. The allegation was completely non specific and did not identify which musically produced art was “illegal”; it was just another scatter gun approach by the authorities to close another site that shares music whether is has copyright or not. Yes the music industry needs to protect itself, but why attack a site that is helping the scene by keeping it alive and therefore keeping an interest in “old Skool” music that will inevitably lead to the industry issuing releases of commercial dance anthems and yet another 100% Old Skool compilation that can be released. If information centres like The Acid House did not exist, then older music would fall into the distant memory of misspent youth. The music found shared here are mainly from white labels, or small defunct independent labels and is as far away from the profit making main stream commercial music as it can get. The industry is does not discriminate, they try and roll the bull dozer through The Acid House, but the foundations are good and The House stands for another day. However cracks in the walls are apparent, and the repairs are becoming more and more difficult to deal with. Let the music be the light that will lead the way and repair the soul.

Another gem from 1992 to let you in on, you really need to play this on a loud system to fully appreciate this one. …..oh the memories !

Was listening to The Sabres of Paradise – Smokebelch earlier, and reminded me that this was effectivly a remake of LB Bad’s tune called New Age of Faith. I have read some stories that the song was never credited to LB, not sure if that is true, as some say it was credited to LB on Smokebelch II. Either way Sabres must have made a shed load of cash from the remake, and reading comments from LB on youtube, he did not get a look into that. But I guess the success came down to the Sabres giving this tune new light and exposure, as LB’s version was seldom heard if at all back in the days. Cannot say I have ever heard it on a late 80’s mix tape. I actually really like LB’s version, but for me the beatless mix by the Sabres is so lush, it makes you just melt into the sand.

Ok I forgot to tell you about my “Warm Sounds” Show that I present on Pirate Revival Radio Station on alternate Tuesdays between 6pm-8pm GMT. For 2hrs I select a kaliedascape of sound including Punk, Funk, Disco, Acid, House, 80’s Synth, Electrofunk and everything else in between past, present and future from the record boxes here at The Acid House.
