While of course it is great to reminisce about music of the past, there are also so many good tunes being produced at the moment that I have been hearing out and about. And with such an abundance to choose from it can be difficult to keep up with the fast moving pace as it is today. Years back you would get your hands on a mix tape, if you were lucky directly from a local DJ, or if it was by a “named” DJ then it was probably be some 100th generation copy of a recording from a live event or studio mix, then came the task of id’ing and tracking down those tunes. These days DJ’s put mixes or podcasts on-line for free and usually provide a track list, keeping you bang up to date with the goings on in the dance music scene. Local Brighton DJ / Promoter Paul Budd who alsi Dj’s under other guises such as Pablo Contraband shares his mixes via the blog Lovemeloveyouback, and usually offers a nice variety of sounds from tech & deep house through to downtempo underground disco grooves. Today I was listening to two of his mixes on my long car journey and thought I’d draw your attention to them, the first is a Slo Mo Mix in a kind of Greg Wilsonesque style which has some outstanding tunes and clever mixing, particularly on the 6th Borough Project’s “do it to the max” (unless this has had a re-edit). And the second mix is more of a deep house flavour but kicking off with a great US rmx of Spandau Ballet’s Chant No 1, the taking you into all different directions of loveliness and also dropping the amazing disco funk fuelled new Joey Negro tune that I was pleased to hear an appearance of, especially after buying my copy a few weeks back.  Anyway go check them out here and open you ears to some new music, you can also be updated on Paul’s up and coming events, in Feb he bought Greg Wilson back to Brighton for an amazing night, and this month see Rocky and Diesel back on the decks for a night of classics and upfront tunes.

Chicago – Street Player ………The Bomb

Posted in Diggers Delight, Music with tags , , , , , , on May 4, 2009 by theacidhouse

In the Mid 90’s The Bucketheads released into clubland a monster record  called The Bomb, I can remember being on the dance floor at The Cafe De Paris, London when I first heard this record and watching the whole place go off. The long build up of the tune was so teasing, it just carried on and on for almost half of the 14 min long track before it exploded into a catchy funk riff that was sample from Chicago’s Street Player. The Bucketheads was the brainchild of US producer/DJ Kenny Dope and was originally started as a backalsh to the commercial eurodance scene. The Bomb had such dancefloor sucess that it created a turning point in club land and revived an interest in US disco influenced house music. For me The Bomb died of an overuse during the mid 90’s, however it cannot be denied it was a true dance floor classic.

Old Skool Legends 1 – Altern-8 – Exclusive DJ Mix

Posted in House, Music, Old Skool Legends, Rave, Techno, mixes with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 27, 2009 by theacidhouse

altern8

The Acid House Presents “Old Skool Legends”, a new addition to the virtual record box that features exclusive mixes from key Dj’s and Producers that were pioneering and inspirational during the explosion of the dance music scene throught the 80’s and the early 90’s.

I am proud to present The Acid House’ first Exclusive mix from the infamous Altern-8, this 2hr mix was recorded live at The Clarence Sligo 18-4-2009.

Altern8 consisted of 2 producers Mark Archer & Chris Peat. Originally starting out as Nexus 21 as a pure techno act, but after recording 9 tracks of a different style whilst using up some studio time, the ’side project’ Altern 8 was born. They decided that although rave music was meant to be danced to not looked at, that live PA’s should entertain the crowd – hence the chemical warfare protection suits and yellow masks! Their first E.P. The Overload E.P. had a distinct techno feel to it, but their second E.P. The Vertigo E.P. took on the sound of the breakbeat hardcore sound. This was released in 1991. This quickly became a massive rave anthem, the title tune Infiltrate 202 is still a massive crowd pleasing tune in old skool raves today. By some (lucky) mistake the record managed to get just outside the top 40, and of course Altern8 decided it would be foolish not to try and knock it up few places. Some rubbish about disco biscuits and an air horn was created and The Sun printed it! This of course was enough to tipple the tune into the top 30. However it was the follow up Activ8 which really took off.

Mixing breakbeat, with hardcore rave rhythms and that famous “Top One Nice One Get Sorted” sample, Altern8 produced definitely one of 1991’s best tunes, which probably everyone remembers. It summed up the happy rave scene perfectly in every way. This was then followed up with the hardcore classic Frequency which was reportedly recorded in the famous 2:30 AM rave in Shelly’s car park. Altern8 only produced 10001 copies of this record and allegedly burnt the master tapes. By now Altern8 were a household name (well if you’re front room is full of techno records!). In another dodgy stunt, they decided to decided to distribute free Christmas puddings to the poor from a hot air balloon, all with the words “The Poor Know The Score” on them. However the idea was shelved when someone who was less pissed noted that Christmas puddings arrive like scuds from 2,000 feet in the air!

More publicity, and the ever increasing popularity of rave culture, made sure that the further releases Evapor8 and Hypnotic St8 (sampling the Nexus 21 release Self-Hypnosis) became massive rave tunes. Coupled with more publicity stunts, this saw Altern8 become huge, doing live PAs everywhere!! They also did remixes for the likes of Phuture Assasains, Blow, Inner City, Suburban Base and more. But as some DJ’s slagged off rave for being apparently cheesy, the popularity of rave culture seemed to decrease and it went back underground, which would explain why Altern8’s Brutal-8-E and Everybody took on a less ‘ravey’ feel, being given jungle treatment by Two Bad Mice & Suburban Base. Everybody was Altern8’s last release in 1993.

PYMCA has built its reputation as the World’s leading  photographic youth music culture archive, specialising in global youth  culture, lifestyle and music and was established over a decade ago by Jon  Swinstead. His aim was to create a collection of images that captured the real  essence of life as a young person. PYMCA has been known as an independent,  London-based archive, since 1997, sourcing, and collecting quality photography  documenting youth and subculture fashions, movements and lifestyles from all  over the world, past and present. PYMCA images are unique by delivering an  intrinsic understanding of these cultures, as opposed to the typical media  stereotyping and pigeonholing. Many of its photographers were deeply involved  in the cultures that they captured through the lens, giving their work an  added intensity and honesty and delivering a more genuine cultural insight.  Over the past few years PYMCA has produced some of London’s most interesting  subcultural exhibitions using images from its archive. In 2009, PYMCA  continues to develop its unique offering of images to now combine more than  just images. If you have a question about youth culture, go to PYMCA.  Unordinary People launches its change to become PYMCA Cultural Research.

Don’t Mess With This Beat

Posted in House, Music, Techno with tags , , , , on April 10, 2009 by theacidhouse

neon

In late 1991 UK hardcore breakbeat artist 2 Bad Mice released Hold it down E.P on Moving Shadow Records. The main anthem on the release was Bombscare and become one of the most recognised tune of its day, being played by almost every living DJ at the time and went down well on both the hardcore rave scene and progressive house club scene. The tunes success came from sampling the very catchy techno hook from Belgium New Beat Artist Neon. Neon had been producing mainly dark moody New beat tunes during late 1980’s with cover versions of Visage – Fade to Grey, and Jamie Principles’ Baby Wants to Ride. In 1990 Neon released on Target records a Techno / House tune that was both bouncy and uplifting , this tune was called “Don’t Mess With This Beat”. The tune may have passed some DJ’s by at the time until 2 Bad Mice cheekily “Messed with the beat” and produced one of the biggest Anthems from back in the day.
